Through efforts and intelligent collaboration between Malaysian Institute for Nuclear Technology Research (MINT) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) along with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a project to develop a tissue bank for Malaysia was carried out in 1990. This international project was running smoothly where in the middle of 1991, a group of pioneer researchers of MINT-USM Tissue Bank started the medical biotechnology based research at the School of Medical Sciences, Health Campus USM, Kelantan. The initial work was on the development of amniotic membrane as wound dressing. The tissue bank was officiated with its original name of National Tissue Bank on the 5th of November 1994 in Health Campus USM, Kelantan by Senator Dato’ Mustapa Mohamad as the Deputy Finance Minister at the time.
In response to the growing number of patients afflicted with traumatic and non-traumatic conditions, the USM Tissue Bank was established with the aim of improving and saving lives by promoting the safety, quality and availability of tissue grafts. The country’s only tissue bank has been prolific in processing numerous tissue grafts for transplantation that are crucial in helping patients regain their health and in some cases, return to normal life.
